Kalimantan Island is divided into Indonesian regions (73%), Malaysia (26%), and Brunei (1%). Kalimantan Island is famous for the nickname "Thousand River Island" because of the many rivers that flow on this island. In ancient times, Borneo - which originated from the name of the Brunei sultanate - was a name used by the British and Dutch colonials to refer to the island as a whole, while Kalimantan was the name used by residents of the eastern part of the island which now belongs to Indonesia. The northern region of the island (Sabah, Brunei, Sarawak) for Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam. While for North Indonesia, North Kalimantan is the province. In the broad sense "Kalimantan" covers the entire island which is also called Borneo, while in the narrow sense Kalimantan refers only to the territory of Indonesia.
